Cambodia is indeed a developing country with a hard contemporary history which bring horror and poverty to its people. Up to 1998, the country was under war and under the Khmer Rouge's regime which has killed 1/4 of the Cambodian people, especially all litterate people.
As a matter of fact, Cambodia lacks today of people to fulfill the requirements of high positions. Moroever, fear of renewed political instability and corruption within the government discourage foreign investment and delay foreign aid, although there has been significant assistance from bilateral and multilateral donors.
In 2007, Cambodia was the 103th economical growth in the world out of 168 countries which seems far from the positon of its main neighbourgs (24th for Thailand, 46th for Vietnam and 128th for Lao PDR).
Per capita income is rapidly increasing, but is low compared with other countries in the region. Most rural households depend on agriculture and its related sub-sectors. Cambodia is self-sufficient in rice. However, few Cambodian farmers grow other crops leaving them vulnerable to crop failure. In recent years, various international aid organisations have begun crop diversification programs to encourage farmers to grow other crops.
Cambodia presents various needs in the fields of medecine and children health, education as well as water access especially in rural area, that is to say the large majority of the country.
However, while beeing there, we noticed a huge wave of dynamism and will among the youngest and we feel that the next generation will largely contribute to heal the country. |
