Dear L93,
Deforestation is very big issue in Indonesia since avery single day, forests are destroyed by fire or man hands.
A lot of original forests - meaning Indonesian original and old threes - are cut down so that industies may be able to plant Pal oil threes instead. Palm oil is being sold in China but also in Europe as a base for products such as culinar oil, make-up, industrialised cakes and sweets ...
What is the link with orangutans you will say?
The original threes that are being cut down are the home of orangutans. When this home is in danger, the animals too. Orangutans are not able to survive in Palm oil threes because they do need the long and thin jungle branches to move in the forest. Besides, they construct their nets in the hights of the original threes which is not possible with palm oil threes. Anyway, if it would be possible, the orangutans would not survive with all the industrialised activities in palm oil threes areas.
The other danger for orangutans is to being catched in the forest by peopla who sell them in Thailand, China or other coutries as pets or attractions for tourists. These captures orangutans are not wild anymore and even some organisations try to recuparate them and put them in the nature again they will die or being hut because they cannot live alone anymore. Governemental Rehabilitation centres exist in Indonesia to help these animals to learn how to become wild again. But it takes time and patience and sometimes some animals are not able anymore.
We will post soon on our website a complete article presenting our meeting with a local organisation which aims at promoting orangutans protection and rehabiliation in Sumatra, Indonesia. |
